Norra Hamnen – a world-class transport centre
Copenhagen Malmo Port AB (CMP) is currently building brand-new, ultra-modern goods and ferry terminals at the Norra Hamnen harbour in Malmö. The City of Malmö is also establishing a logistics centre for industries dependent on transport in this part of the harbour. The area to be exploited in the form of terminal areas and logistics centres is the size of 300 football pitches. This makes Norra Hamnen one of the largest infrastructure projects ever in the region.
In spring 2009, CMP started the construction of docks, terminals, roads and tracks to allow ferry, train and lorry freight to be handled in the same place. This work will be finished in 2011, at which time CMP will be able to handle five times as much freight as it does now. The investment is worth around SEK 900 million. It paves the way for transport services with a reduced environmental impact, as ferries and lorry traffic will be moved further away from the city centre of Malmö.
