DFDS consolidates in a competitive market

A long-standing customer of CMP, DFDS experienced growth in both passengers and freight volumes on its routes in the North Sea and the English Channel in 2013

DFDS, the Danish shipping and logistics group with an extensive network of RoRo, RoPax and passenger routes in Northern Europe, has just presented excellent accounts figures for 2013. CMP has a long-standing collaboration with DFDS, which is one of the port’s established customers for RoRo and ferry services out of Copenhagen.  

DFDS has grown in particular in relation to its North Sea traffic and the Channel routes between England and France. 

”The annual accounts are evidence of the expansion that has been achieved, partly through a keen focus on our customers, who have consolidated our market share, and partly through continual adaptation of our operation. We have benefitted from growth in the North Sea market, however, declining activity in Russia has reduced volumes in the Baltic region. We have improved our results in the Channel services, but the area is always a major challenge”, says Niels Smedegaard, CEO of DFDS. 

”DFDS is in a strong position, both financially and strategically, even though growth in the market is expected to remain low, with competition continuing to increase.  Our aim for 2014 is to continue creating synergies by expanding our European network through acquisitions. We will remain fully committed to focusing on making improvements and adaptations”.   

Key figures: In 2013 DFDS achieved growth in its operating profit (EBITDA) of 11%, to DKK 1,213 million. Turnover increased by over 3% to DKK 12.1 billion. Utilization of increased capacity and streamlining operations improved the operating margin from 9.3% in 2012 to 10.0% in 2013. Profit before tax increased by 36% to DKK 367 million.

DFDS has more than 6,000 employees in 20 countries.
