Lindbäcks is shipping units to CMP in Malmö

When the location of Lindbäcks’ new production facility was being chosen, the transport logistics were an important element of the supporting data for the decision. The choice made was Haraholmen in Piteå, with the proximity to Piteå Port and the opportunity for maritime transport operations being major factors. Production has now been up and running for eight months, and this week Lindbäcks shipped its first load by sea. “We loaded and dispatched 85 units down to Lund. Marine transport is an excellent complement to road transport, so we’re now conducting a first test,” says Lars Wallgren, Logistics Manager.

Lindbäcks has been working in close collaboration with ShoreLink, Piteå Port & Hub and Copenhagen Malmö Port. The ambition to ship units has been there for a long time, but this was the first time that it felt financially and environmentally sustainable.

“Using maritime transport for domestic transport operations is a must to relieve the load on both road and rail in Sweden, which has one of the longest coastlines in Europe. We’re delighted that Lindbäcks chose Haraholmen, Piteå, for their new factory, so that it’s easy to use maritime transport for their goods. This project is a good move for the future and to increase maritime transport from the region,” says Ulrika Nilsson, CEO of Piteå Port & Hub.

“This is a test at this stage, but there are many advantages in making transport operations by ship succeed. For one thing, it’s good to reduce the load on the roads, and if we use vessels that return southbound with a load instead of being empty, we can enjoy both environmental and financial benefits,” says Lars Wallgren.

Ann-Charlotte Halldén-Åkeson, Key Account Manager at Copenhagen Malmö Port AB, is also positive about the new partnership with Lindbäcks.

“For us, it’s really exciting to enter into this partnership and to be able to support this kind of goods flow. Shipping goods from north to south by sea is both sustainable and efficient. Malmö has a good strategic location both for transport onwards into Europe and also as a regional hub with short local transport links. In this particular case the goods will continue to Lund.”

Susanne Jangdal, CEO of ShoreLink, which operates the port in Piteå, is very pleased with the partnership between all parties and views this as a good test.

“This new kind of cargo places strict demands on good logistics and effective handling in the port in Piteå, where we have major projects at the same time, such as wind power and our regular scheduled services. But I’m convinced that we can manage this with the experienced and competent personnel we have in place,” says Susanne Jangdal, CEO of ShoreLink.

This transport operation is the first of two loads. The first transport operation has 85 units and the second will have 90. The units will be used to build Sagoeken, a project involving 175 apartments in Lund, which Lindbäcks is building for Stiftelsen AF Bostäder.
